Starting in 2006, the Rivers Foundation started supporting the Mathari Children’s Fund which was founded by Cathal Conaty on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya. Located in one of the poorest parts of the Nairobi, residents of this slum live in extreme poverty.
The Rivers Foundation began by supporting local children in education by donating to the Mathari Children’s Fund, but after Alan and Alexander Rivers visited the slum, and spent time with the local social workers, the foundation decided to assist specifically with the funding of a Social Centre. Completed in 2011, this now provides educational facilities and social services to hundreds of families that live in Mathari. Alice, the first student who went to university as a result of the scheme, was flown to London in 2011.
